Trendy chocolates sold at Costco recalled over allergy risk

If you have been stocking up on those trendy Dubai-style chocolates at Costco, you will want to check your pantry. A popular batch of these chocolates has just been recalled because of an allergy risk linked to wheat. While the company says the overall health risk is small, this recall is important if you or someone in your family has a wheat allergy.

Here is what you need to know.

What chocolates were recalled from costco

The recall involves Dubai Style Chocolate squares sold by Rolling Pin Baking Company, a New York-based bakery. These snacks were sold in Costco stores from May 1 to August 29 across certain U.S. regions, including Los Angeles, San Diego, and parts of the Northwest and Southeast.

The issue comes down to a labeling problem. According to the notice posted on Costco’s website, the allergen statement on the packaging is incorrect. It lists “gluten” instead of “wheat,” which could be confusing for people who have wheat allergies.

Eddie Dayan, Quality Assurance Director at Rolling Pin Baking Company, explained in the recall notice: “We assess the health risk to be minimal as gluten is listed on the allergen statement and gluten is found in wheat. In addition, Kunefa (which is known to contain wheat) is also listed in the ingredient statement.”

Still, if you have a wheat allergy, even a small mislabeling like this matters.

What should you do if you bought the recalled chocolates

If you purchased these chocolates, here are the next steps:

  • Check your packaging: If the chocolates were bought between May 1 and August 29, they may be part of the recall.
  • Stop eating them immediately if you or anyone in your household has a wheat allergy.
  • Return them to Costco for a full refund. Costco has confirmed that customers will get their money back with no issue.
  • Contact Rolling Pin Baking Company if you have any questions. Their customer service line is (833) 331-2993 and is open between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

If you do not have a wheat allergy, you are not considered at risk, but the company is still encouraging customers to stay informed.

Why Dubai chocolates became so popular

These chocolates are not just any candy. They first went viral on TikTok in 2023 after content creator Maria Vehera shared a video of herself trying one. The hype has not slowed down since.

So, what makes them so trendy?

  • A hard Belgian chocolate shell
  • A nutty pistachio filling
  • A crunchy layer of kadayif (a shredded pastry often used in Middle Eastern desserts)

Rolling Pin Baking Company even described them earlier this year as “a chocolate experience like nothing you have had before.” For many fans, these chocolates are rich, unique, and hard to stop eating once you open the bag.

The popularity was so high that Rolling Pin Baking Company proudly shared posts in May saying the chocolates would finally hit Costco shelves. By September 3, they even announced the chocolates were back in stock after selling out.

How recalls like this affect shoppers

Food recalls can be frustrating, especially when it is a product you were excited to try. But they are important for protecting people with serious allergies. Even a small label mistake can cause big problems for those who depend on accurate allergen information.

For Costco shoppers, this is a reminder to always double-check product labels—especially when it comes to new or imported snacks.
