If you rely on Supplemental Security Income (SSI), there’s an important update for the rest of 2025 that you need to know. The thing is, in certain months, you’ll receive only three payments — each up to $1,450 for couples. Here’s what you need to know, who is affected, and how to plan for the change.

What is SSI and what is the maximum benefit in 2025?

SSI, or Supplemental Security Income, provides monthly payments to Americans who are older, blind, or disabled, and who are surviving with very limited income and resources.

In 2025, the federal benefit rate (without state supplements) is $967 per month for an eligible individual and $1,450 per month for an eligible couple.

Because SSI checks are typically mailed or electronically sent on the first of each month, recipients generally get one payment per month — four checks in a quarter or year segment.

Why is there only three payments remaining in 2025

We are almost halfway into the last quarter of the year. And since it’s the second month of the last quarter—October—you will be getting two checks this month as a result of the calendar alignment and federal rules. This means that:

  • If the first day of a month falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the SSI payment is moved to the last business day of the previous month.
  • In October 2025, there will be an SSI check on October 1 and another on October 31, because November 1 falls on a Saturday. That effectively delivers November’s payment early, meaning there will be no separate SSI check in November. Therefore, for the period covering late 2025, recipients will receive only three SSI payments—the last set of checks coming in December.

So November may seem like a “missed” month, that extra check has been folded into an earlier date. Planning ahead will matter a lot more this year.

Will the payment amounts change?

The amount per check remains unchanged under the 2025 rates — up to $967 for individuals and up to $1,450 for couples (before considering state supplements or income adjustments).

However, since the timing has been slightly changed you need to plan for your money effectively, unless your state adds supplemental payments to make up for it.

Who are those affected by this slight payment adjustment?

If you are an SSI recipient, especially someone receiving the federal benefit without large state supplement boosts, you will see this shift. Those who get both SSI and Social Security benefits may still receive multiple payments depending on different schedules.

If you depend on this regular monthly income, you need to know this timing change so you can budget appropriately.

How to plan for this new payment adjustment

Here are a few steps you can take to curtail your spending and manage your money effectively:

  1. Adjust your monthly budget — Know that one month’s payment is coming earlier (October 31) and you will not be getting a separate check for November.
  2. Watch your states’ SSI supplement — If you collect extra SSI money from your state, the supplemental payment might help you get more money.
  3. Monitor your bank account — Be extra alert on deposit dates in late October and December.
  4. Seek advocacy or assistance if needed — Some states or nonprofit groups help SSI recipients with planning during “short months.”
  5. Stay updated via SSA — The Social Security Administration usually publishes calendars and notices about payment timing. So check their official schedule.
